The Leaf
Resting alone in
the ruffling sharp blades of grass, it billows around in various perimeters
along with its peers fearlessly. Crunch! One of its picayune companions has
disintegrated into ashes of miniscule particles. The wind aimlessly directs it
into an alternative course which leads it to a new safe niche in a corner concealed
from the world behind a bush. My eye
catches its attention and I examine it carefully. Murky brown yet unique in
appearance. As the radiating heat penetrates its soft fragile body, its sheathing
concealment creates creases and caves inwards. It’s beautiful, yet dirty
appearance creates an illusion to the eye. The grainy enclosed casing forms a
rough yet appealing touch to the finger which caresses in sluggish and delicate
motions. My pupils focus intently and become engrossed in its diminutive
details. In the middle, subtly thin and dim veins make their own routes like
millions of different highways leading to a new destination. Small holes become
visible, piercing through the elusive surface of the leaf. These holes convert
into tunnels overlooking the world around them, and they observe the faults of
the nature encompassing their surroundings. Three arms branch out standing as a
silhouette and stand united like siblings huddling together for protection. Yet,
the weather withers them down into an impenetrable state making them desperate
to rest upon each other’s shoulder as one of them flakily relies on its last ligament
of support. As the rest of the members
come into a closer proximity to each other, they give the impression of being in
their last stages of life. As my finger continues to stroke this product of
nature, it senses the coarse cracks that warmly embrace the fragile skeleton.
My mind escapes from its normal barriers to realize how this leaf generates the
simple yet misleading impression of nature. Its macabre appearance expresses how
the world’s treasures aren’t always as pure as they seem. As the dangerous
world engulfs and smothers it with its harmful influence, the leaf fractures
down vigorously bit by bit and the family is destroyed with nothing left and in
the next instant, a new member is about to sprout.
